What the Latest Super Performance Test Means for Members

Why long-term value matters more than a single year's return

What the Latest Super Performance Test Means for Members?w=400

Australia's superannuation sector is again under pressure to prove that member money is being managed efficiently, with the latest performance test results putting underperforming options in the spotlight.
The annual assessment, run by the prudential regulator, compares certain super products against benchmarks that reflect their investment strategy, fees and long-term net returns.

For everyday members, the test is designed to answer a simple but important question: has this fund option delivered acceptable value over time? While super is a long-term investment and short-term market movements can be noisy, persistent underperformance can quietly reduce retirement savings by thousands of dollars over a working life.

The performance test applies to MySuper products and a growing range of trustee-directed investment options. Products that fail must notify affected members, and those that fail repeatedly can be closed to new members. That makes the test more than a regulatory scorecard; it is a direct signal to members to pay attention to where their retirement savings are invested.

This latest round also comes as super funds face broader scrutiny over member outcomes. Investment performance remains crucial, but it is only one part of the value equation. Fees, insurance settings, communication, retirement support and service standards can all affect whether a fund is genuinely working in a member's interests.

For Australians reviewing their super, the key is not to react hastily to one headline. A failed test is serious, but members should still consider their age, risk tolerance, insurance needs and whether they are in the right investment option.

It is also worth checking whether you have multiple accounts, duplicate insurance premiums or an investment setting that no longer suits your goals. Small administrative issues can compound over time, just as investment returns do. Anyone unsure where to start can focus first on reviewing their fund, comparing fees and understanding how their current option has performed over several years.

The broader message is clear: super should not be treated as set-and-forget. The performance test gives members a useful warning system, but the best outcomes usually come from regular, informed check-ins rather than waiting for a regulator or fund to prompt action.
