Car Finance Demand Holds Up as Buyers Watch Budgets

Stronger showroom supply is meeting stricter serviceability checks

Car Finance Demand Holds Up as Buyers Watch Budgets?w=400

The latest read on Australian vehicle lending suggests car buyers have not walked away from the market, even with household budgets still under pressure.
As more cars become available and some dealers compete harder for orders, finance demand is being supported by buyers who see an opportunity to secure a vehicle without the same delays or mark-ups seen during the tightest supply years.

For borrowers, the key message is that activity in the finance market does not mean approvals are automatic. Lenders are still looking closely at income stability, existing debts, living costs and the size of the proposed repayment. A loan that appears manageable against the purchase price can look different once insurance, registration, servicing, fuel or charging, and any balloon payment are included.

This is where the current market can feel slightly contradictory. Better stock can improve negotiating power, and some brands are using drive-away offers or lower promotional rates to keep sales moving. At the same time, lenders are likely to test whether the borrower can afford the full commitment over the term, not just the first few months of a campaign offer. A low advertised rate may also come with eligibility rules, establishment fees or conditions tied to a particular model, loan term or deposit.

The trend builds on the earlier improvement in showroom stock, but the finance decision now needs to be more precise. Buyers who are upgrading from an older vehicle should consider whether their trade-in value, deposit and preferred term still leave enough room for everyday expenses. Those looking at electric, hybrid or higher-priced SUVs should also factor in running-cost differences rather than focusing only on the monthly loan amount.

A practical approach is to:

  • set a maximum drive-away price before visiting dealerships;
  • check whether any promotional finance rate applies to the chosen model and term;
  • compare the headline rate with the comparison rate and fees;
  • keep a buffer for insurance, maintenance and registration;
  • avoid stretching the term only to make the monthly figure look easier.

Before applying, buyers should estimate repayments across several loan sizes and terms, then allow a buffer for unexpected expenses. Comparing the repayment, the comparison rate and total interest payable can help reveal whether an offer is genuinely competitive or simply attractive at headline level.

For Australians planning a purchase this spring, the lending data points to a market that is active but disciplined. There may be more room to negotiate on vehicles, yet finance approval still depends on presenting a clear, affordable application. The strongest position is to know the budget first, then shop for the car and loan structure that fit it.

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s latest retail payments update offers another useful snapshot of how households are managing everyday spending, card use and short-term credit. Fresh consumer warnings about online vehicle scams are a timely reminder for caravan buyers to slow down before transferring deposits, sharing identity documents or arranging settlement.
