Why SME Borrowers Still Need to Shop Carefully for Finance

The latest lending-rate signals point to a market where preparation can make a real difference

The latest Reserve Bank lending-rate data gives Australian small business owners another reason to look beyond the first offer on the table.
While business credit has continued to expand through 2026, the price paid by smaller borrowers remains highly dependent on loan structure, security, trading history and lender appetite.

This is an extension of the trend seen in earlier rate data: SMEs generally do not access finance on the same terms as larger businesses. Bigger firms often have stronger balance sheets, deeper banking relationships and more assets available as security. Smaller businesses, particularly newer operators, sole traders and self-employed applicants, can face more questions around cash flow reliability, tax position, debt levels and the purpose of the loan.

For business owners, the important point is not simply whether average rates are moving up or down. The more practical issue is how lenders assess risk. A business seeking working capital without property security may receive very different pricing from one financing a vehicle, plant or equipment asset. A business with clean financials, current tax obligations and stable revenue may also be treated differently from one with irregular income or recent arrears.

That makes preparation a cost-control strategy. Before applying, SMEs should review recent financial statements, BAS records, bank conduct, existing debts and projected cash flow. A lender will usually want to understand why funds are needed, how the money will support the business and whether repayments remain manageable if revenue softens or costs rise.

Borrowers should also compare the whole facility, not just the headline rate. Fees, loan term, repayment frequency, security requirements, balloon payments, early repayment rules and flexibility can all change the true cost of finance. A lower rate with restrictive conditions may not always suit a business that needs seasonal cash flow flexibility.

For anyone considering a new facility, it can help to estimate repayments under several scenarios before speaking with lenders. Testing different loan sizes, terms and rates can highlight whether the proposed borrowing leaves enough buffer for wages, tax, stock, rent and day-to-day operating costs.

The broader message is that business finance is still available, but lenders remain selective. SMEs that can present a clear purpose, strong records and realistic repayment assumptions are better placed to negotiate and compare options. In a market where small differences in pricing can compound over the life of a loan, taking time to prepare may be just as important as timing the application.

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s latest retail payments update offers another useful snapshot of how households are managing everyday spending, card use and short-term credit. Fresh consumer warnings about online vehicle scams are a timely reminder for caravan buyers to slow down before transferring deposits, sharing identity documents or arranging settlement.
